As you may know, I love to keep updated about Compensation & Benefits and HR, and I do a lot of reading on the topic. To help you save time, here is the first version of my monthly “Share the knowledge” so that you have a one-stop shop access to these gems 🙂
Some of the best or most relevant C&B, performance management, HR and/or global mobility articles that I came across recently.
- Intel rewards employees for thinking sustainable
- An old article about a very special way of paying employees… Thougt provoking though probably not applicable everywhere !
- This article reacts on how Rupert Murdoch denied any accountability in the recent News of the World illegal phone hacking scandalÂ
- Do you make salary budgets based on cost of living or cost of labor ?
- Human nature is such that we very rarely do things that don’t provide a payback in some form or other. This payback may be financial, psychological or even spiritual, but with few exceptions this is the way of the world that we live in.
- Bad times spur desertions
- More workers than ever pursue dreams and jobs as free agents
For those of you who are interested in GCC and MENA articles, here are some regional pieces
- Saudi woman’s guide to pension
- Introduction of HR Manual for companies in Oman
- A very thorough article on emiratisation
- On visa restrictions in the GCC
- On the results of Omanisation :
- Great article on the Arab awakening
- … and an interesting comparison to the situation of the youth that recently rioted in London
- A great C&B job that recently opened in Dubai
Best of the rest
These articles that are less focused on C&B or HR, but ay cover leadership, governance, social media and networking, and generally-speaking, articles that gave me food for thought in whatever arena…
Because even though we are specialists in our field, us Compensation and HR people cannot live in an ivory tower, and we need to understand what is going on around us if we want to deliver the best possible support to our organisation.
- Some companies look for ” talent based on the proposition that who you are as a person counts for as much as what you know at any point in time ” and hire for attitude, then train for skill.
- .. While others hire for aptitude, then fire for attitude…. Both situations mean that soft skills matter more than ever.
- How cities outlast companies. A theory that companies could try to learn from cities, because cities, as they grow, become more successful – while companies usually eventually fade away as they drown in bureaucracy when they become bigger.
- A corporate climate of mutual help. In this article, Edgar Schein argues that today’s organisations need to be like surgery teams, where everyone helps one another, not just the “boss helps subordinates” approach which is used in most companies nowadays.
- The price of (not) speaking truth to power. The article opens up on some interesting questions to ask oneself…
- Are scorecards and metrics killing employee engagement ? Corporations need to build guidelines and values – not absolute rules and measures. “Doing what’s right for the customer” is a value that can drive appropriate action. Judgment requires coaching, practice and training.
In conclusion, a “special” for today’s menu. I’d like to encourage Middle East organisations to participate into the HR Competency Study, organised by HR guru Dave Ulrich and Wayne Brockbank. It takes place every 5 years, and the closing date will be around late Sept so don’t miss out !
I know, that’s a lot of reading… that’s why I’m posting this just before the week-end, so that you have time to go through 🙂
Let me know if you want me to write a piece related to any of the topics that I have shared here.
Enjoy !
