Seth Godin’s posts are notoriously short and to the point.

The End of Should is a recent one that I thought Compensation and HR professionals could use :

Banks should close at 4, books should be 200 pages long, CEOs should go to college, blogs should have comments, businessmen should be men, big deals should be done by lawyers, good food should be processed, surgeons should never advertise, hit musicians should be Americans, good employees should work at the same company for years…

Find your should and make it go away.

(emphasis is mine)

What are the Shoulds that we use all the time, sometimes even thinking, and may be better off re-examining or eliminating ?

Here are a few to get you started :

  • Salary ranges should be spread 20 to 25% around the midpoint
  • Promotions should all be done at the same time
  • Salary increases at our company should be the same as the market trend
  • Sales incentives should be paid each quarter
  • Performance rankings should be done on a 5-point scale
  • We should have job descriptions
  • Deferred pay should be paid over 3 years
  • Performance feedback should be given at mid-year and year-end
  • Maximum bonus payment should be 150% of target bonus

Care to share the Shoulds you will be revisiting for your organisation ? List them in the comments section !
